Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if it supported it or not...
I have set the windows audio device to the ATI HD audio device, settings to 5.1 speakers.
With TMT3 set to 5.1 speakers, I get "stereo" sound. TMT3 information display shows DTS, LPCM, DD,... but it all is played as stereo by my AV receiver (set to direct stream).
But ATI/AMD suggest:
the HD2600 Pro should have 5.1 AC3. So I tried a few old dvd disc, but still "stereo".
So, I don't get it...
Anyway, in the meanwhile I understood that I should have a HD5850/5870 to have the DTS HD, True HD audio bitstream through HDMI (similar as a real blu ray player) and wait for the TMT3 update/patch, right?
Just a few minutes ago, I found this
I'll try that tomorrow.
Thanks again!

From my findings AC3 is 5.1 Dolby Digital derived from 2 channel lpcm.

Did you ever go in and make sure you have Windows set to 5.1 and do some test that it's actually working outside of TMT? Until Windows is set up right, TMT can't support it either.
(Vista and Win7 make this really easy in the audio manager, but I don't know about XP.)
The 5xxx series offer bitstreaming and PAP. This means the AVR can theoretically do the decoding instead of TMT, and this has some technical and quality advantages. However, for the average user, it's nothing particularly noticeable (in my experience with other bitstreaming hardware since the 5xxx obviously has no capable software at this point) compared to just letting TMT decode it at 48khz/16-bit which is handled fine by the ATI 4xxx cards.

I have installed the Realtek HD HDMI driver for ATI, see link in my previous post.
The sound manager of my WinXP set to 5.1 speakers. The audio settings of TMT3 set to HDMI.
In short, it works. All the sounds tracks from DVD (DD5.1, DTS) played correctly and the AVR shows the corresponding type of audio on its display.
The HD audio tracks on a blu ray, TrueHD, DTS HD are "converted" to DD5.1 and DTS. And the played correctly. The 7.1 LPCM played and displayed as stereo, as ecpected.
I didn't install a second software player.
For the moment, at least I have surround sound. I know the limitations of the HD2600 Pro.
So, my next step is to get something better. I'll certainly have a look at your suggestions.
Many thanks to you guys, ArcSoft_Jason and davinleeds
