    Posted: 17 Mar 2010 at 7:42pm

I am suffering from the same "Device is not available..." error that seems to have afflicted many others using the ArcSoft and Hauppage products. Is there any actual solution to this problem? The lack of real answers in the forums and accounts of no responses from ArcSoft support lead me to believe this is simply a problem with no solution, and many people are now out of hundreds of dollars...

Every time I attempt to capture video using TME, I am told that "Device is not available or is in use by another application..." which is obviously not the case. I have attempted to update all drivers. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software. And to no avail. I have tried a variety of combinations of starting one and then starting the other, etc. Nothing seems to work...

I am using the Hauppauge HD PVR with the original ArcSoft Total Media Extreme.

My computer is a Windows 7 machine with an Intel i7 processor at 1.60 GHz and 4.00 RAM. My video card is an NVidia GeForce 310M.

Based on all of the other forum posts I have read, I'm fairly certain that no one has a solution to this problem. I've since lost my receipt, so there's no chance of returning the PVR. So my only other option is to just eat the money I wasted. I hope that's not the case...

I fixed the issue on my setup by disabling HPET (High Precision Event Timer) in the BIOS. No idea why it causes the error when its enabled, but it does.

My setup is an Nvidia 780i MB, and GT-250 video card, Vista 64 OS.

Hope this helps.

Although I understand his frustration, the OP's unpleasant tone in this and other threads makes me loath to try to offer any help.  But since this problems seems common, and I need help on it myself, I'll add what I know.

I have only been testing my new HD PVR for a couple of hours, and I have quickly determined that the cause of this error (at least in my case) is directly related to trying to record with the "capture duration" time set, which causes the recording to stop within a couple of minutes and leaves the software unable to communicate with the HD PVR.  So far, I have not had a single problem with recording or the "Device is not available" error if I simply start recordings without a duration and manually stop them.

Once the error does start (from testing the capture duration setting), I can sometimes solve it by just unplugging/replugging the USB cable from the HD PVR, but usually I have to force cancel the TME Capture Module as well.

So now I know how to prevent it, as well as how to recover from it.  But the big problem is I absolutely need the capture duration function, so I too am looking for a solution.  I haven't had a chance to see if my BIOS has an HPET setting, but that is a good start.  Any other ideas?  Does anybody successfully use the capture duration with TME 1.0.9.9 in XP?  Thanx,
Goose

Well gee, don't I feel  a bit sheepish!Exclamation  A simple delete of all Hauppauge and Arcsoft items and reinstall seems to have solved all my problems so far.  And I didn't even have to say ugly things about either vendor to get there.  I don't know if I'll run into other problems during my testing, but I certainly hope everyone will find such easy solutions to their problems!  I feel a little bad about posting about my issue before even completing such basic  troubleshooting steps, but reading so much vitriol about how bad this issue was with so many users and how there didn't seem to be any solutions available made me jump to unfounded conclusions too quickly.  Hope this post gives others some hope and leads them towards the easy fix that may be just around the corner for them too.

Update - I spoke too soon.  Although I have succeeded in one or two timed recordings, most of the attempts continue to end in an aborted recording and locked up TME CaptureModule.  I am currently waiting on a tech support response from Hauppauge on the problem.

New update - putting the software on a more powerful computer resolved those issues for me.  I was using a laptop that just met the minimum requirements from Hauppauge, but it looks like those minimums are a bit too minimum!

I too have just suffered this problem. I emailed Arcsoft Technical support, as i know there is an .ini file which can be sent to users to rectify this problem. Hopefully i hear back from them soon.
